As someone who’s explored Chengdu and fallen in love with its calm, tea-sipping pace, I can honestly say that visiting the Panda Research Base Chengdu was one of the most beautiful and entertaining experiences I’ve had in China.
Watching these gentle giants roll around, snack on bamboo, and play (or play-fight) together is an unbelievable and surreal experience.

What Is the Panda Research Base Chengdu?
So you are probably wondering what are we actually talking about here? Officially known as the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, this world-famous conservation centre is dedicated to protecting and breeding giant pandas (yes, exactly like the pandas you saw on Ku Fu Panda) and red pandas (small little red haired pandas).
However, it’s not a zoo, it’s a research and breeding facility, focused on education, rehabilitation, and scientific study. Visitors can learn about panda conservation efforts and see pandas in naturalistic enclosures surrounded by bamboo forests.
The base is home to over 150 pandas, including adorable cubs (if you’re lucky enough to visit at the right time of year!).

Best Time to Visit the Panda Research Base Chengdu
Timing is everything when it comes to pandas. They’re most active early in the morning, especially during feeding time.
Opening hours: Daily, 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (last entry at 5:00 p.m.)
👉 My tip: Go as early as possible. We arrived around 7:30 a.m. when the base opens, which I highly recommend you do too. The pandas are usually active until about 10 a.m. and after that, most of them take long naps.
However, something we did not know until we visited – the pandas do not like extra hot days, so if you go on a very hot day, they might go in for a nap even earlier than 10 a.m.
The day we visited was mid-July and it was super-hot. Many of the pandas did not even come outside we had to look at them through glass windows. And the pandas that did come outside to say hi, went back in by 9:30/10 a.m.

Best months to visit Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding Chengdu:
- March–May and September–November for the best weather. Not too hot, but still sunny. Little to no rain.
- July–September if you want a chance to see panda cubs in the nursery but just remember, if you visit on a super-hot day like we did, you may see less pandas out and about.

How to Get to the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding Chengdu
The Panda Base is about 10 km (6 miles) from Chengdu city centre, making it easy to get too for an early morning entry.
By Didi (Best Option)
- Didi is literally the Chinese version of Uber, but 10 times cheaper. This is the easiest and most comfortable way to get to the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
- A one-way trip costs around 25–40 RMB and takes 25–35 minutes depending on traffic and where you are staying.
- It took us 28 minutes from where we were staying near Chunxi Road, and cost just 25RMB.
By Metro + Shuttle Bus
Take Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue Station, then hop on the free shuttle bus to the entrance.
With a Guided Tour
Alternatively if you prefer everything arranged for you, there are plenty of half-day or full-day panda tours from Chengdu. These usually include transport, entrance tickets, and sometimes a stop at a local tea house or other attractions in or surrounding Chengdu.

What to Expect at the Panda Research Base Chengdu
The base is LARGE. Much, much larger than I was expecting. But it is peaceful, and surrounded by bamboo groves, lots of lush greenery and some beautiful lakes. However, be prepared to walk and wear comfortable shoes.
At the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding you’ll find:
- Giant panda enclosures (with different age groups). We loved reading the fun-fact platforms at each enclosure. Some of the pandas’ personalities were hilarious.
- Red panda section. These pandas were so small and cute. And not what I expected them to look like at all.
- Panda nursery (seasonal) – Unfortunately closed for some reason the day we visited. But I heard when it is open you get to see the most adorable baby pandas.
- Giant Panda Museum- Filled with the cutest panda merch. I could not resist getting a panda ice-cream. I inhaled the chocolate coconut flavoured one at 9am for breakfast, no shame, I was on holiday.
- Shaded walking paths and small lakes.
- Snack shops, cafés, and souvenir stores – Bring water! Although these shops are filled with drinks and snacks, weirdly enough, we struggled to find any selling water.
Most enclosures are open-air and designed to mimic the pandas’ natural habitat. Expect to spend around 2-3 hours exploring.
Insider tips to ensure a perfect visit
✅ Arrive early
Panda’s nap mid-morning. I recommend arriving for 7.30 when the base opens, not only to beat the crowds, but to make sure you catch the pandas out and about before it gets too hot for them.
✅ Avoid super-hot days.
We visited in mid-July, and by around 9am most of the pandas had already gone inside because the heat was too intense. Although we could still see them through the glass, it definitely got a bit hectic – lots of people pushing and shoving to get their photos and videos. And if you’re a 5’2” girlie like me, you’ll struggle to see much unless you push your way to the front!
✅ Avoid weekends and Chinese holidays
The crowds can be intense, especially during Chinese National Holidays. These are the best dates to avoid travelling if you want a calmer experience:
- Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) – late January or February
- Labour Day Holiday – early May
- National Day “Golden Week” – the first week of October
During these periods, millions of people travel across China, and popular attractions like the panda base can be packed.
✅ Wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen or a hat
It’s a BIG area with some slopes, so have your comfiest walking shoes. I lived in my Asics when travelling in China, they’re super comfy and leave zero blisters.
Also, most walkways at the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding are outdoors, so bring sunscreen or a hat. We made the silly mistake of forgetting to apply sunscreen and ended up like tomatoes.
Tip: It is hard to find sunscreen in China and a lot of them you do find have bleaching elements in them, so bring some with you.

If you want to visit early, you can consider staying near the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding the night before. Or just like us, you can stay in Chengdu city centre and take a 25-30 minute transport to the panda base.

Is Chengdu Panda Base Ethical?
This is one of the most common questions travellers ask and top of my list before visiting.
The answer is YES. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is widely recognised as one of the most ethical and reputable panda conservation centres in China. It’s not a zoo. It’s a research and breeding facility focused on education, rehabilitation, and reintroducing pandas to the wild.
The pandas live in spacious, natural-style enclosures surrounded by bamboo forests, and the base plays a major role in increasing the global panda population. That said, it’s still a popular tourist attraction, so expect crowds during peak times.
Can You Hold a Panda in Chengdu?
Funny question, but its asked all the time. Interestingly, visitors could pay to hold a panda at certain centres near Chengdu in the past. However, this practice has now been stopped for ethical and safety reasons. Which, I completely agree with!
Today, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding no longer allows any direct contact with pandas to protect both the animals and the visitors.

Visiting the Research Base of Giant Breeding Panda Chengdu is, in my opinion, one of those experiences that genuinely stays with you. Watching the pandas play, roll around, and even play-fight with each other made me completely understand why they’ve captured hearts around the world.
The panda base is beautifully designed, surrounded by greenery, and you can really see the care that goes into protecting these incredible animals.
It’s not just a tourist spot; it’s a chance to witness China’s real commitment to wildlife conservation and to learn more about the future of panda protection.
